68 die, 22 survive airliner crash in Kyrgyzstan 24.08.2008//14:43 GMT Kyrgyzstan/Bishkek-Manas International Airport A passenger jet carrying 90 people, including a Kyrgyz high school sports team, crashed shortly after takeoff Sunday near the Kyrgyz capital, killing 68. The Boeing 737-200 passenger plane (reg. EX-009) was headed to Iran when it crashed near Bishkek's Manas International Airport. Twenty-two people survived the accident. An airport official said the crew reported a technical problem about 10 minutes into the flight and that the plane was returning to the airport when it crashed. Officials said the crash followed the sudden decompression of the jet, which came down in a field near a village. Eighteen survivors were hospitalized, and four others were sent home with no serious injuries. The people on board the plane included 24 Kyrgyz citizens, 52 Iranians, three Kazakhs, two Canadians, one citizen of Turkey and one Chinese. The plane went down 6 miles from the airport. Maj. Damian Pickart, public affairs officer for the U.S. air base located at the Manas airport, said U.S. ambulances and firefighting equipment were dispatched to the crash site in response to a Kyrgyz request for help. Several government officials said the plane belonged to Itek Air, a Kyrgyz company, but was operated by Iran Aseman Airlines. But Mamytov, the presidential adviser, said the plane was both owned and operated by Itek Air. Itek Air has been banned from operating in the airspace of the European Union because of failure to meet safety and aviation standards, according to a list published by the EU July 24. Kyrgyzstan is a poor, mountainous country west of China. The U.S. air base in the ex-Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan supports operations in nearby Afghanistan. Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan and the country's largest city, has a population about 1 million and is situated in the northern part of the Central Asian nation. Manas International Airport is about 16 miles northwest of downtown. |

Fiery plane crash at Madrid airport kills 154 20.08.2008//12:45 GMT MADRID, Spain - A jetliner heading to the popular Canary Islands vacation resort crashed during takeoff Wednesday, turning a wooded area off the end of a runway into a hellish scene of charred bodies and smoldering wreckage. Some 153 were believed dead - Spain's worst air disaster in nearly 25 years . Only 19 people survived the midafternoon crash of the Spanair MD-82 at Madrid's Barajas International Airport, and some were in critical condition. The plane carried 172 crew members and passengers, including two babies and 20 youngsters. There was no word on how many children died. As smoke billowed from the wreckage, dozens of fire trucks and ambulances rushed to help, lining a nearby road and filling a field next to a swath of charred vegetation. Helicopters flew over dumping water on fires. Rescuers rushed the few survivors to hospitals, while emergency workers shrouded the dead in white sheets. Later, a long convoy of black hearses rolled onto the airport grounds to carry bodies to a makeshift morgue set up at Madrid's main convention center. A stready stream of hearses arrived at the morgue under police escort Wednesday night. Mourners went to a special waiting area, avoiding photographers and reporters. It was not immediately clear what went wrong. The jetliner had barely gotten airborne when it veered right, crashed and broke into pieces. Spanair, a Spanish company wholly owned by Scandinavian Airlines, said it did not know what caused the accident. Investigators ruled out foul play and considered the crash an accident. The plane's flight data recorders had been recovered. While preparing for a first takeoff attempt, the plane's pilot reported a breakdown in a gauge that measures temperature outside the plane. The gauge was fixed, delaying the departure, said Spanair spokeswoman Susana Vergara. It was on the second takeoff attempt that the plane crashed. Spanair Flight JK5022 originated in Barcelona and was headed for the city of Las Palmas. It was a code-share with Flight LH255 of the German carrier Lufthansa. In Germany, Lufthansa said it issued tickets to seven people who checked in for the flight and four of those were from Germany. It was unclear whether they were German citizens. Sweden's Foreign Ministry said two Swedes were on the plane. It said one was at a hospital but the other was unaccounted for. The accident was Spain's worst air disaster since 1983, when a Boeing 747 operated by the Colombian airline Avianca crashed near Madrid on landing approach, killing 181 people. In 1985, an Iberia Boeing 727 crashed near Bilbao in the Basque region, killing 148 people. The deadliest disaster in aviation history occurred in Spain in 1977. Two fully loaded Boeing 747s collided on a runway in the Canary Islands and a total of 583 people died. 24.08.2008 - A woman from the injured in crash died. |

*/Ecuador/Sigchos-Toacazo - Cargo plane crashes in Ecuador's Andes
31.08.2008/02:50 GMT A Venezuela cargo plane crashed in Ecuador's central Andes mountains shortly before it was to land, killing the three crew members on board. The Boeing 737-200 plane (reg. YV102T), operated by state-owned Venezuelan carrier Conviasa, lost contact with air traffic controllers five minutes before it was to land in the town of Latacunga, where it was scheduled to undergo maintenance. The plane reported that it had begun preparing for descent and then lost contact with the control tower. The wreckage with the bodies of the two Venezuelan pilots (Gerardo Ruigel and Pedro Mendibe) and a mechanic (the Ecuadorian Jose Gonzalez) were found in a remote area 35 km from Latacunga. Venezuelan Civil Protection director Luis Diaz said the plane with three Venezuelan crew members was "empty to receive maintenance." It took off from Maiquetia, home to Venezuela 's main international airport, en route to Latacunga, located about 90km south of Quito. The cause of the crash has not been determined. Weather was clear for the flight. |
16.09.2008 - The wing flaps on a plane that crashed in Madrid last month (20.08.2008) were not deployed properly at take-off, a draft preliminary report has concluded.
Investigators found that the pilots were unaware of the problem because a cockpit warning alarm did not go off. The Spanair plane plunged to the ground shortly after take-off, killing 154 people on board.
It was the deadliest air crash in Spain in 25 years. Investigations into the crash are continuing, with no firm conclusions yet made about whether the disaster was the result of technical fault or human error. Cockpit recordings The MD-82 jet, which was preparing to fly to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, had aborted a previous take-off attempt before it crashed. The draft report of the investigating committee details how the aircraft crashed when it attempted to take off following a brief stop for technicians to correct a fault in a temperature gauge. The pilots had detected the high temperature as they readied the plane for take-off, having already deployed the wing flaps, the plane's black box recorder showed. They aborted the take-off to get the temperature gauge looked at by technicians, the draft report says. By the time the plane resumed its position on the runway, the flaps - which make it easier for aircraft to get off the ground at take-off speeds - had been retracted, data from the black box is said to show. The MD-82 plane is equipped with sensors intended to warn pilots whether flaps are correctly deployed before take-off. However, the draft report suggests no warning signal sounded in the cockpit before the pilots accelerated the plane down the runway for the ill-fated take-off attempt. Deadly precedent The draft report said Spanair did not rigorously follow advice from the plane's manufacturers to check the flap deployment warning signal. Following an MD-82 crash in the US city of Detroit in 1987, which killed 154 people, McDonnell-Douglas (now part of Boeing) advised that flap and slats indicator systems be checked before each flight. However, Spanair only carried out checks on the system before the first flight of each day or when the pilot and co-pilot was changed, the draft report said. The pair in control of the plane had already taken it from Barcelona to Madrid on the morning of the accident without incident, and were not under orders to check the systems before beginning their next flight, the draft report said. Investigators have not released any official statement on the disaster, and Spanish Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba told Spanish TV the government would not comment until the investigation had been completed. "In my experience an accident doesn't happen for a single reason," he said. "We are going to wait for the report to be finished to find out what happened because there are many theories," Mr Rubalcaba added. |
