*/Emergency helicopter landing: Heart attack kills MONUC crew member

KINSHASA, Dec 18, 2007 - A crew member died Tuesday of a heart attack as the helicopter he was travelling on in the conflict-torn eastern Democratic Republic of Congo made an emergency landing, said a UN spokeswoman.
"According to early information received by MONUC (the UN peacekeeping mission), this accident was due to a technical fault," Sylvie van den Wildenberg told news agency AFP.
"The provisional toll is one death, a crew member who suffered a heart attack shortly after the emergency landing, and several other people on board injured."
Emergency helicopter landing: Heart attack kills MONUC crew member
The aircraft, an MI-17 transporting "at least six civilian passengers and five crew members", was forced down in the Masisi territory, near Matanda, some 45 kilometres (30 miles) west of the provincial Nord-Kivu (east) capital of Goma. It was travelling between Goma and Walikale, a mining town about 130 kilometres northwest of Goma.
MONUC was unable to give details as to the nature of the civil mission, nor the identity of passengers and the dead person. Crew on these helicopters are generally Russian or Ukrainian. "A rescue party and a (UN peacekeeping) rapid reaction force have been despatched urgently to the scene," van den Wildenberg added.
Since the end of August, 20,000 government soldiers in Nord-Kivu have been involved in fighting against around 4,000 troops loyal to renegade ex-general Laurent Nkunda.
Nkunda claims to be defending Tutsis against Hutu rebels from neighbouring Rwanda. He has rejected demands by Kinshasa and the UN to disarm, as well as by Washington to surrender and go into exile. About 800,000 villagers have been displaced, according to the UN, by clashes not only between the army and Nkunda, but also by fighting involving the Mai-Mai militia and Rwandan Hutu rebels hostile to Nkunda. (AFP)
As an addition the Russian medias said that the crashed helicopter was
Mi-8 (RA25492) belonging to the Russian aircompany UTair.

*/ Plane Crashes in Antarctica, Scientists Safe

An airplane chartered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) crashed shortly after take-off Thursday in Antarctica while providing support to a group of researchers at a remote location on the southernmost continent.
None of the 10 people aboard was injured, but the
DC-3 Basler (C-FMKB) was severely damaged. The aircraft experienced difficulties in taking off from a field site near Mt. Patterson in West Antarctica on the morning of Dec. 20, local time, roughly 550 miles from McMurdo Station, NSF's logistical hub in Antarctica. The wings, props, and tail all got bent up pretty bad. The landing gear, skis, and hydraulic system (the red stain in the picture is hydraulic fluid) all were ripped from the plane and strewn about the ice. The six passengers aboard the plane were part of the NSF-funded portion of the international Polar Earth Observatory Network (POLENET) project, which is deploying GPS units and seismic sensors across Antarctica to make observations that are vital to understanding how the massive ice sheets are changing.
Plane Crashes in Antarctica, Scientists Safe
In turn, these measurements are critical to understanding how ice sheets affect sea level worldwide, and thereby global climate in general. The researchers and four aircraft crewmembers were flown back to McMurdo Station. The plane is owned by Kenn Borek Air Ltd., a Canadian aviation firm.

Tarom aircraft damaged at
Otopeni Airport, Romania
30.12.2007 - A Tarom Boeing 737-300 aircraft  (YR-BGC) that was scheduled to depart to Sharm El Sheikh with 117 passengers and six members of the crew on board collided with a maintenance vehicle on the runway last Sunday. There were no victims in the accident, but the landing gear, jamb, left-hand side fuselage, all the main engine, the left wing were damaged and the structure of the plane suffered distortions. The preliminary Report that was prepared at the beginning of the week by the accident investigating commission identifies the cause of the accident to be the bad co-ordination between the tower and the maintenance team on the runway.  The airplane involved in the incident had been authorised by the tower to go on the runway and take off.
23.12.2007 - Girl survives Panama plane crash
A 12-year-old US girl has been found alive in the wreckage of a light aircraft which crashed into the western Panama jungle in bad weather on Sunday.
Francesca Lewis was injured and suffering from hypothermia when found by locals searching for the plane. She has been transferred to hospital and reportedly in a stable condition. However, her 13-year-old friend Talia Klein, Talia's California businessman father Michael Klein and the Panamanian pilot were all killed in the crash. Their bodies were found in the wreckage of the plane.

Mr Klein had chartered the pilot Edward Lasso to fly him, his daughter and her friend to the Chiriqui volcano, about 285 miles (460 km) west of Panama City.
On Sunday morning they had departed from Islas Secas, an island in the Pacific Ocean owned by Mr Klein, where they had been on holiday.
The flight should have taken about 45 minutes, but the plane suddenly disappeared from radar about noon. Mr Klein's ex-wife Kim had offered a reward of US$25,000 to anyone able to locate the plane. Mr Klein, was the chief executive officer of Pacificore LLC, a Santa Barbara-based company that manages several hedge funds.

*/US/FL/Everglades - Plane crash over Everglades kills pilots

With planes submerged in water, there's 'no chance of survivors,' official says
Both pilots were killed in a midair collision Saturday between two propeller planes in an area over the Everglades known for potential dangers. One of the planes was a 1964 Piper Twin Comanche on a flight plan from Ocala to Pompano Beach Air Park, and a Miami approach controller was giving the plane directions to the airport.
The controller instructed the Piper to descend to 2,000 feet and advised the pilot that there were other airplanes in its vicinity, according to Jim Marinitti of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association. The controller, who was "moderately busy" at the time, made radio calls to a few other aircraft. Then he heard a "conflict alert" at his radar station, meaning two planes were too close together.
At about 3 p.m., the controller was about to call the Twin Comanche to warn the pilot but by then both planes had already disappeared from his screen. The flight plan for other plane, a Cessna 152 based in Palm Beach County, is unclear, and the controller in Miami was not in contact with it. It was the fourth midair collision of small planes over South Florida, one of the nation's busiest areas for general aviation flights, since 2000.
