Hot air balloon crash kills 11 in New Zealand

New Zealand/ Carterton - A Cameron A-210 hot air balloon, registered ZK-XXF and named Mr Big, clipped some powerlines and crashed on Somerset Road at Clareville near Carterton, New Zealand. The balloon operated on a scenic flight. All eleven occupants were killed.
The victims were:
- Hot air balloon pilot Lance Hopping, aged 53 of Masterton.
- Husband and wife Howard and Diana Cox of Wellington. Howard was aged 71 years and Diana 63.
- Husband and wife Desmond and Ann Dean of Masterton. Ann was aged 65 and Desmond aged 70.
- Cousins Valerie Bennett, aged 70 of Masterton and Denise Dellabarca, aged 58 of Paraparaumu.
- Partners Stephen Hopkirk, aged 50 and Belinda Harter, aged 49 years, both of Lower Hutt.
- Johannes Jordann, known as Chrisjan, aged 21 of Wellington and girlfriend Alexis Still, aged 19, also of Wellington

An Tracep Antonov 28 airplane was destroyed in an accident near Namoya, D.R. Congo. The captain (the Russian - Vladimir Kurbatov), the co-pilot (an Indian) and a passenger died. Two occupants survived: a 66-year-old woman - uninjured and a crew -member - injured.
The airplane departed Bukavu (BKY) at 07:45 on a domestic flight to Namoya. The plane failed to arrive and a search was initiated. The crew of another aircraft found what looked like the debris of the Antonov in a forest. A government spokesman could not confirm whether any had survived. He believed that the accident was due to bad weather. Tracep Congo Aviation is known to operate at least one An-28, 9Q-CAX but it has not been confirmed if this was the plane involved in the accident. The aircompany is blacklisted in the EU.
