29.07.2007//00:22 GMT Russia/Moscow/Domodedovo Russian Cargo Plane Crash Kills 7 A 43-year-old Russian cargo plane crashed Sunday minutes after taking off from a Moscow airport, killing all seven crew on board, officials said. The An-12 four-engine turboprop belonging to the private Atran carrier went down at 4:22 am local time, just after taking off from the Domodedovo airport southeast of Moscow. The plane slammed into a field, shattering debris over a wide area. There were no injuries on the ground. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear. Rescue teams have recovered three plane's cockpit recorders, which are vital for investigators to determine the reason behind the crash. The plane was carrying nine tons of cargo, well below its maximum payload of 20 tons. It was bound for Komsomolsk-na-Amur with landing for refueling in Bratsk, in eastern Siberia. The An-12 was designed in the 1950s and built in big numbers for both military and civilian transport. More than 100 such planes are still in service in Russia and other nations. The plane that crashed was to be discarded later this year, the RIA Novosti news agency reported, quoting aviation authorities. Russia and the other former Soviet republics had the world's worst air traffic safety record last year, with an accident rate 13 times the world average, according to the International Air Transport Association. Experts have blamed weak government controls, poor pilot training and a cost-cutting mentality among many carriers that affects safety. Also on Saturday, a Boeing 757 of Russia's private VIM-Avia carrier bound for Naples, Italy, had to return to Moscow after a crack was discovered in its windscreen, the Interfax news agency reported. It landed safely. |

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) -- The pilots of doomed TAM Airlines flight 3054 screamed "slow down!" and "turn, turn, turn!" seconds before their Airbus A320 skidded off the runway in Sao Paulo and slammed into a building , flight recorder transcripts revealed Wednesday. According to transcripts read before a congressional commission investigating air safety in Brazil, the pilots were unable to activate the spoilers -- aerodynamic brakes on the plane's wings -- as they sped down the short, rain-slicked runway. "Only one reverser. Spoiler nothing," says pilot Henrique Stephanini Di Sacco, 53, giving the first indication that something is wrong. "Look at that. Slow down, slow down," says co-pilot Kleyber Lima, 54. Di Sacco replies: "I can't. I can't. Oh my God! Oh my God!" Lima's last words are: "Go! Go! Turn! Turn! Turn!" The recording ends with screams and a woman's voice, followed by an explosion. The July 17 crash at Congonhas airport killed all 187 aboard the jetliner and 12 people on the ground in Brazil's deadliest air disaster. Brazilian daily Folha de S. Paulo reported that according to the flight data recorder, one of the plane's throttles was in the wrong position as it touched down, causing it to speed up instead of slow down. |
