Iran/Mashhad-Shahid Hashemi Nejad Airport (MHD)

At least
16 people have been killed and 33 others have been injured when an Aria Airlines plane crash-landed in the northeastern city of Mashhad.
Thirteen of the 16 people killed in a plane crash,
flight 1525, were members of the crew, 5 of them from Kazakhstan, 3 Russians, 1 Georgian and 4 Iranians. The 3 passengers killed in the crash were also Iranians. Among the dead in Friday's crash was the manager of privately owned Aria Airlines.
The
Ilyushin IL-62 jplane, registration number UP-I6208, en route to the northeastern city of Mashhad from Tehran crashed as it was attempting to make an emergency landing at the destination at about 18:10 (13:40 GMT), Friday.
The aircraft, registered in Kazakhstan, carried 153 passengers and crewmembers onboard.
The cockpit and front part of the fuselage were completely destroyed.
Iran's civil aviation spokesman, Reza Jafarzadeh, said the plane's high speed while landing was a key cause of the crash, according to the TV report. Iran's official news agency said Friday that the tires of the Ilyushin-62 plane failed on landing.
A crash survivor said the passengers felt air turbulence as they were landing and the plane bounced up and down on the runway.
"The only thing we did was protect our children, and all of a sudden, dust was thrown in our faces," state TV quoted the survivor. "When we wanted to escape, the emergency exit door was broken, and when they opened it, we did not dare jump down because it was too high. We slid down the wings."
The Il-62 is a long-range airliner with a capacity of about 185 passengers and a fair service record.

Afghanistan/Kandahar NATO base

A Russian-owned civilian helicopter crashed and burst into flames shortly after takeoff at southern Afghanistan's largest NATO base Sunday, killing 16 civilians.
There were no indications that the crash of the Mi-8 helicopter at southern Kandahar Air Field was caused by hostile fire, military officials said.
Sixteen people died in the crash, and five were wounded and were treated on the NATO base.
No military personnel were wounded or killed, NATO said. The helicopter burst into flames when it crashed near the runway only moments after takeoff.
The
Mi-8 was owned by the Russian air company Vertikal-T. It cited Russian charge d'affaires Andrei Vadov as saying there were no Russians among the 16 killed.
The Mi-8 helicopter can seat up to 24 people. Civilian helicopters help ferry civilian contractors and supplies to small military outposts across Afghanistan.
Moldovian helicopter shot down in Afghanistan

14.07.2009
Afghanistan/Helmand province/Sangin district - A civilian helicopter ferrying humanitarian aid was shot down Tuesday in a southern Afghan province where fighting with the Taliban is raging,
killing all six Ukrainian crew members and a child on the ground, officials said. Two U.S. Marines and an Italian soldier died in the latest clashes.
The transport helicopter crashed in flames in the Sangin district of Helmand province, the center of Afghanistan’s opium poppy cultivation where thousands of Marines are conducting their biggest offensive since the hardline Islamic movement was ousted from power in 2001.
NATO officials in Kabul said the cause of the crash was under investigation. The civil aviation authority of the former Soviet republic of Moldova said a rocket or a missile struck the
Mi-26 helicopter (ER-MCV), owned by the Moldovan air charter company Pecotox-Air. The helicopter had been ferrying humanitarian aid when the crash took place.
The Taliban posted a statement on its Web site claiming the helicopter was brought down “by anti-aircraft fire” with 37 British soldiers on board. Moldovan and British authorities said no British troops were on the helicopter. Daud Ahmadi, the spokesman for the Helmand governor, said a 6-year-old child on the ground was also killed.
The crash occurred about a mile from a British military base. The helicopter exploded in a ball of flames, generating smoke that could be seen over a wide area.

All 168 on board killed
in Iran plane crash

15.07.2009//07:03 GMT
Iran/Qazvin/Jannat Abad

A Caspian Airlines flight was en route from Tehran to Armenia when it went down just after 11:33 a.m. local time near the Iranian city of Qazvin, some 75 miles northwest of Tehran. The
Tu-154 plane, with registration number EP-CPG, performed flight 7908 from Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport to Yerevan, Armenia, when it crashed 16 minutes after takeoff. The crew had reported some sort of technical problems and was attempting to return to the airport to make an emergency landing. Unfortunately the airplane caught fire and then crashed. All on board, 156 passengers and 12 crew members, were killed in the crash. Among them were 2 Canadians, 2 Australians, 2 Georgians, 6 citizens of  Armenia and Iranians. Caspian Airlines' representative in Armenia, Arlen Davudian said,
victims' relatives would be paid compensation of at least euro32,000 ($45,216).
Iranian civil aviation agency chief Ali Ilkhani said the Tu-154M that crashed was built in 1987, was bought by Iran in 1998 and had an overhaul certificate valid until 2010.
The black boxes — containing the plane's cockpit voice and flight data recorders — will be key to determining the cause of the crash, which remains unknown.

Helicopter crash kills 41 security personnel

03.07.2009
Pakistan/near Peshawar/Chapri Ferozkhel -
Taliban militants Saturday claimed responsibility for a military helicopter crash that killed 41 people in the rugged tribal area in the country's north.
A military spokesman rejected the claim, reiterating Saturday that the helicopter had crashed due to a 'technical fault.'
According to officials, the helicopter crashed because of some technical fault.
Forty-one security personnel on board a military transport helicopter were killed when it crashed in Chapri Ferozkhel area on the border of Khyber and Orakzai tribal regions on Friday afternoon, credible sources said.
Those killed included 19 personnel of the paramilitary Frontier Crops, 18 regulars from the army and four crew members, the sources said. However, officials said that 26 personnel had been killed.
According to the sources, most of the personnel on board were proceeding on leave.
The army spokesman was not available for comment, but a government official said the Russian-made
Mi-17 transport helicopter had crashed in a mountainous area, some 20km from Peshawar, on the border between Khyber and Orakzai because of some technical fault.
‘All those on board the helicopter have been killed,’ the official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to release information to the media.
He said that paramilitary forces had cordoned off the area and efforts were being made to retrieve the bodies. ‘The area is remote and inaccessible.’
The sources said that pilots of the ill-fated helicopter had requested for emergency landing before the crash. ‘The copter might have come down because of overloading,’ they said.
The government official said the actual cause of the crash would be determined after a detailed examination of the wreckage. ‘It is a lengthy exercise.’
Witnesses said the helicopter was flying at a low altitude in an area of high mountains. It was going to Peshawar from Parachinar, the headquarters of Kurram Agency.
The official said: ‘The weather was bad and the copter was flying low. It could either be because of the bad weather or excess weight. But nothing can be said with certainty until we retrieve the wreckage.’
He said that militants had 12.7mm machine-guns which could easily hit helicopters flying at low altitude. ‘Combat and transport helicopters usually fly high to avoid fire from the ground.’
He said that paramilitary forces and helicopters had been sent to the area to retrieve the bodies and the wreckage.
The official said that helicopters had to fire some warning shots to keep the locals away from the crash site. ‘The area is infested with militants, so all precautionary measures are being taken to secure the area.’
