Grande Comore

Yemenia plane crashed in Indian Ocean with 153 people on board
29.06.2009//22:51GMT Comoros/around 20 kms NW off Grande Comore Isl.
The flight, Yemenia Flight 626, started at Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport on Monday when an Airbus A330-200 aircraft flew to the southern French city of Marseille and then on to Sanaa in Yemen.
At Sanaa, passengers changed to an Airbus 310-300 and departed for Moroni via Djibouti.
The aircraft involved in the accident, registered under the number 70-ADJ was MSN (Manufacturer Serial Number) 535. It was first delivered from the production line in 1990 and has been operated by Yemenia since October 1999. The aircraft had accumulated approximately 51,900 flight hours in some 17,300 flights. It was powered by Pratt and Whitney engines PW4152. Moroni is about 2900 kilometres south of Yemen, off the east coast of Africa. The plane crashed in the early hours of the morning several nautical miles off the Comoros islands (longitude 043° 16, latitude 11°013), with 142 passengers and 11 crew aboard on its second attempt to approach for landing in bad weather. The wind speed was 61 kilometers per hour as the plane was landing. A United Nations official at the airport said the control tower had received notification the plane was coming in to land, and then lost contact with it. The French patrol boat, the Rieuse and fregate Nivose, a reconnaissance ship, were being sent to crash site as well as Transall, a military transport plane. On 30.06.2009 at 08:09am – Yemeni civil aviation sources say first bodies have been recovered; at 08:59 am – the wreckage of the Yemenia passenger plane that crashed off the coast of Comoros has been spotted; at 10:58am – the only survivor, the 13-year-old girl Bakari Bahia, has been found. 26 of the identified bodies were Comorian, 66 French, a Palestinian, and a Canadian as well as a crew of 11 including six Yemenis, two Moroccans, an Indonesian, an Ethiopian and a Pilipino. The EU and France have both said they highlighted safety concerns over Yemenia planes and said the jet that crashed had not flown into EU airspace since 2007. |
Flight AF447 crashed over the Atlantic Ocean
01.06.2009//02:14 GMT - An Air France Airbus A330-200 (registration F-GZCP) went missing on transatlantic flight from Rio de Janeiro-Galeao International Airport, RJ (GIG) to Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. The airplane carried 12 crew members an 216 passengers. Flight AF447 departed at 19:03 local time (May 31) from Rio de Janeiro (GIG). Last radio contact with the flight was at 01:33 UTC. The report said the pilot sent a manual signal saying he was flying through an area of "CBs" — black, electrically charged cumulo-nimbus clouds that come with violent winds and lightning. Satellite data has shown that towering thunderheads were sending 100 mph (160 kph) winds straight into the jet's flight path at that time.
Ten minutes later, the plane sent a burst of automatic messages, indicating the autopilot had disengaged, the "fly-by-wire" computer system had been switched to alternative power, and controls needed to keep the plane stable had been damaged. An alarm also sounded, indicating the deterioration of flight systems. Three minutes after that, more automatic messages indicated the failure of two other fundamental systems pilots use to monitor air speed, altitude and direction. An automated message was delivered by 02:14 UTC indicating a loss of pressurization and failure in the electrical system. Brazilian military pilots first spotted the floating debris early Tuesday in two areas about 35 miles (60 kilometers) apart, said Air Force spokesman Jorge Amaral. The area is not far off the flight path of Flight 447.
The cause of the crash will not be known until the black boxes are recovered — which could take days or weeks. But weather and aviation experts are focusing on the possibility of a collision with a brutal storm that sent winds of 100 mph straight into the airliner’s path. But several veteran pilots of big airliners said it was extremely unlikely that Flight 447’s crew intended to punch through a killer storm. Air France received a bomb threat four days before Flight 447 plunged into the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Brazil. The telephone warning targeted a flight from Buenos Aires that was also travelling to Paris.
Although that plane arrived safely on May 27, the news fuelled speculation that there may be a more sinister explanation for why the Airbus from Rio de Janeiro vanished from radar screens and may have broken up thousands of feet in the air. The missing Airbus was delivered to Air France in April 2005 and had flown for about 18,000 hours on some 2,500 flights, the manufacturer said in a statement. The company said it is offering technical assistance in the investigation. Airbus declined to comment on the cause.
The plane last underwent maintenance on April 16, Air France-KLM said. This air crash would be the deadliest crash in Air France's history. Hundreds of relatives grieved deeply for those who were lost, a roster that included vacationers, business people, and an 11-year-old boy traveling alone back to England.
Brazil is holding three days of national mourning, and French President Nicolas Sarkozy was joining relatives at a service at Notre Dame Wednesday. |

Seven killed in French helicopter crash
20.06.2009//17:00 GMT France/Bregnier-Cordon - Seven people, including six employees of an amusement park, were killed when a helicopter crashed in a rural area of eastern France on Saturday night. The accident happened near the small town of Bregnier-Cordon, where people playing bowls alerted authorities after seeing the helicopter go down. The Eurocopter AS-350B-2 Ecureuil helicopter belonging to the Azur Helicoptere company had taken off from the Walibi theme park in the Isere region before crashing into Mount Cordon, in the neighbouring department of Ain. The helicopter company declined to comment on the accident, which firefighters said happened around 7:00 p.m. near the town of Bregnier-Cordon.
“A witness called in the accident. He saw this blue and white helicopter flying at a low altitude before losing sight of it and then he heard a explosion and smelled a strong odour of kerosene,” said Captain Frederic Bertin of the fire and rescue operations centre for Ain.
The reason for the crash was not yet known, officials said. |

Plane on Food Mission Goes Missing in Papua
29.06.2009//around 06:50 GMT Indonesia/Irian Jaya/Polimo and Soba distrcts A small DHC 6-300 Twin Otter cargo plane, registered as PK-BRO, owned by private operator Aviastar, went missing 30 minutes into its flight over the mountainous central region of Papua, a spokesman for the national safety body said on Monday.
The Aviastar’s Twin Otter, produced 1981, had gone missing while flying from Dekay in the Yahukimo district to Wamena in the neighboring district of Jayawijaya, with three people on board.
It was supposed to be a 30-minute flight scheduled to arrive in Wamena at 4 p.m.
The plane was captained by Frans Noble and co-piloted Dedi Sudrajat, and carried one crew member, Ahmad Khaironi, and cargo of staple foods.
The search focused on areas between the districts of Polimo and Soba, but the team find no signs of the Aviastar plane’s whereabouts.
Aviastar is a Jakarta-based airline that has operated chartered planes since 2000. Papua’s mountainous topography has forced locals to rely on air transportation to deliver various goods, as well as for transportation. |
The only known survivor of the Yemenia flight which crashed into the Indian Ocean has arrived back in Paris on a French government plane.
The 13-year-old girl, Baya Bakari, was found clinging to wreckage in the sea, hours after the crash.
She had been treated in hospital in the Comoros Islands for injuries thought to include a broken collar bone and burns.
The plane, going to the Comoros from Yemen's capital Sanaa, came down in bad weather with 153 on board.
Baya Bakari was accompanied on the journey back to France by the French Minister for Co-operation, Alain Joyandet, and other officials. Her father, Kassim Bakari, met her on arrival and said his daughter had been thrown from the plane as it hit the water.
She clearly recalled the chaos of her time in the water, including hearing voices around her in the darkness.
"She's a very timid girl, I never thought she would escape like that," he said, adding that she was "fragile" and barely able to swim.
French officials in Moroni have praised the girl's courage, with Mr Joyandet describing her rescue as a "true miracle".
"She is a courageous young girl. She really showed an absolutely incredible physical and moral strength." |
