Air India plane crashes, killing at least 158 people 22.05.2010/00:45 GMT India/Mangalore-Bajpe Airport (IXE) A Boeing 737-800 passenger plane, operated by Air India Express and registered VT-AXV, was destroyed when it crashed while landing at Mangalore-Bajpe Airport (IXE), India. The airplane, operating as Air India Express flight IX812 had left Dubai Airport (DXB) on an international passenger flight to Mangalore. Local media reports indicate that there were 160 passengers and 6 crew members on board. The original passenger list showed 169 names but nine passengers did not board the flight. Air India Express reports that eight occupants survived the accident. The airplane overran runway 24 and slid down a wooded valley, bursting into flames. The bodies of the victims were so charred that the state government said they would have to be identified with DNA tests. Runway 24 has LDA (landing distance available) of 2450 m. And as the AIP India states "Aerodrome located on hilltop. Valleys 200ft to 250ft immediately beyond paved surface of Runway." The Aviation Minister, Praful Patel who was at the crash site at the Bajpe Airport said that the weather condition at the time of the landing of the aircraft was fine. However, according to a report there was slight drizzle. "I can't believe I survived the crash," said G.K. Pradeep, one of the survivers reliving the moments before the tragedy. "There were vibrations before the plane crashed... as soon as it hit the ground, I managed to get out and jump into a pit. There was smoke all over as the plane caught fire. After ten minutes, there was an explosion," he said. The "black boxes" have been found and a probe has been ordered into the accident. The crashed Boeing 737-800 was produced on 20.12.2007 and registered by Air India Express on 21.01.2008. |
