50 dead after Russian airplane crashes upon landing 17.11.2013/ 15:20 UTC Russia/ Tatrstan/ Kazan (KZN) A Boeing 737-53A passenger plane (VQ-BBN), operated by Tatarstan Airlines, crashed at Kazan Airport (KZN), Russia. All 44 passengers and six crew members were killed. Flight U9-363 departed from Moscow's Domodedovo Airport (DME) at 18:20 local time on a scheduled service to Kazan (KZN). The crew executed a missed approach procedure while on approach to Kazan's runway 11/29. The airplane crashed and exploded. A security camera video shows the airplane impacting the ground in a near vertical attitude. The Russian aviation experts said the plane's two pilots had failed to make a proper landing approach on their first attempt, so they aborted that landing and began a second try.The pilots put the plane's engines on maximum power, raising the plane's nose to an angle of about 30 degrees. That caused a loss of speed, similar to an automobile slowing down as it climbs an increasingly steep incline. The plane's angle was around twice as steep as an airliner on takeoff, according to Kevin Hiatt, president of the U.S.-based Flight Safety Foundation. At an altitude of about 700 meters (2,200 feet), the crew then tried to gain speed by putting the nose of the plane down, but it went into a dive of about 75 degrees and smashed into the ground. Airplanes can sometimes recover from steep dives but they must be at a sufficiently high altitude. The plane's climb and its subsequent plunge lasted only about one minute and it struck the ground going about 450 kilometers per hour (280 mph), the report said. The report drew its conclusions from data retrieved from one of the plane's two onboard black box recorders. |
