Congo crash toll over 50, but survivor found 04.10.2007//09:40 GMT Congolese President Joseph Kabila sacked his transport minister on Friday as the death toll from the latest air accident in the central African country rose to more than 50. But Democratic Republic of Congo's authorities announced that a Congolese mechanic aboard the Russian-made cargo plane that came down in Kinshasa on Thursday had survived the crash. Congo has one of the world's worst aviation safety records and Thursday's air disaster, in which an Antonov 26 plunged into a neighborhood of the sprawling riverside capital, was the latest and most deadly of a series of recent accidents. The Humanitarian Affairs Ministry raised its provisional death toll from the accident to 51 and said this could rise further. At least 25 people were badly injured, apparently all on the ground when the plane crashed into the neighborhood. The surviver was named as Dede Ngama and said he was recovering in Kinshasa's Roi Baudouin hospital. "He's alive and well. He's talking and he's even been on TV," added the ministry spokesman S.Kinyongo. The Russian captain - Barannik Valeriy Petrovich, co-pilot - Starovoytov Sergey and flight engineer of the plane - Bondarev Ivan were all killed. Congo's cabinet met on Friday to look at ways of toughening existing air safety regulations, including improved inspection and harsher penalties for offenders. At the crash site in the Kingasani neighborhood, police struggled to keep back onlookers and looters. Officers made several arrests of young men who tried to scavenge scrap metal, engine parts and valuables from the twisted, blackened wreckage. The twin-propeller aircraft had crashed onto houses in the Kingasani district shortly after taking off from nearby Ndjili international airport. Africa One is on the European Union's airline blacklist. All airlines certified by Democratic Republic of Congo authorities -- except for Hewa Bora Airways -- are banned from the EU. |

Army helicopter escorting Musharraf crashes in Azad Kashmir; four including brigadier killed 08.10.2007 Pakistan/Azad Kashmir/MUJHOI An army helicopter accompanying President Gen. Pervez Musharraf to quake-hit Azad Kashmir crashed in flames Monday during landing, killing four people on board. Army’s chief spokesman Maj. Gen. Waheed Arshad termed it as a “technical fault.” The army Puma helicopter was one of three choppers that took Musharraf and aides to Azad Kashmir on the occasion of the second anniversary of the Oct. 8, 2005, earthquake that killed nearly 80,000 people. Arshad said Musharraf had already reached his destination when the accident occurred. State television later aired footage of him touring the quake zone Monday. The fatalities included a cameraman for state-owned Pakistan Television, a military intelligence brigadier and two soldiers, officials said. The president's spokesman, Maj-Gen (Retd) Rashid Qureshi, suffered a burned right hand but was in stable condition, they said. The helicopter went down on the outskirts of Mujhoi, a village 20 kilometers south of Muzaffarabad, the capital of Azad Kashmir. Hundreds of villagers and scores of soldiers swarmed around the smouldering helicopter wreckage, 100 meters from Jhelum River. Part of the chopper's tail jutted above the crowd. At least four ambulances, sirens wailing, left the scene carrying injured people. Witnesses said the helicopter's engine was on fire before it hit the ground but there was no indication it had come under fire. Minutes before, two other helicopters flew past the village, they said. Naseer Ahmed, a resident, said the noise of the engine suddenly grew louder and the pilot found level terrain on the outskirts of the village for an emergency landing. He said several passengers jumped from the chopper before it hit the ground and exploded into flames. He said he helped drag bodies out of the burning chopper. Maj-Gen Arshad said the helicopter made a crash landing in the Jhelum Valley due to a technical fault. Security was tight in Muzaffarabad on Monday morning, restricting residents' movement in anticipation of Musharraf's arrival to the city, about 100 kilometers northeast of Islamabad. //Dawn |

Skydivers, pilot of fatal Wash. crash found 08.10.2007// 03:00 GMT US/Washington/White Pass The Cessna 208 Grand Caravan (N430A) left Star, Idaho, near Boise, around 7 p.m. Sunday en route to Shelton, Wash., but did not arrive as scheduled. On board were 9 skydivers and a pilot. The plane was past due at midnight, and authorities organized a search for it at about 2 a.m. Radar shows the plane was at about 13,000 feet when it reached the Tieton River valley. The plane then turned around 360 degrees, then lost about 7,000 feet per minute before it disappeared. Eight aircraft, including two helicopters and 50 volunteers searched in an area Monday south of White Pass, along the north fork of the Tieton River, southeast of the White Pass Ski Area. The plane crashed just east of the crest of the Cascades, about five miles south of White Pass and on the edge of the Goat Rocks Wilderness. The crash site is about 25 miles southeast of Mount Rainier. Bodies of seven of the 10 people aboard were found Monday. Recovery crews found the rest on Tuesday. The plane, a single-engine turboprop built in 1994, was found within 200 yards of its last radar ping in rugged terrain at an elevation of 4,300 feet. The crash site measured about 100 feet by 60 feet, indicating that the plane probably went straight down. There was no explosion or fire. The plane is all in one spot. The victims were Casey Craig, of Bothell; Hollie Rasberry, 24, of Bellingham; Michelle Barker, 21, of Kirkland; Landon Atkin, 20, of Snohomish; Jeff Ross, 28, of Snohomish; Cecil Elsner, 20, of Lake Stevens; Andrew Smith, 20, of Lake Stevens; Bryan Jones, 34, of Redmond; Ralph Abdo, whose age and hometown were unavailable; and pilot Phil Kibler, 46, of the Seattle area. The pilot of the plane did not report problems before the plane crashed Monday in the country's. The weather is often bad in that mountainous area in central Colombia, and that it is interfering with rescue efforts. Two Colombian Air Force planes and two helicopters are searching for the missing plane, which had been travelling between the towns of Villavicencio and La Uribe, in the Meta province. 11.10.2007- Fifteen Colombian soldiers and three civilian crew members were killed when their plane crashed earlier this week in the jungles just south of the Andes mountains, the army said on Thursday. Authorities are investigating why the two-engine Let-410 (HK-4055) aircraft went down on Monday during a routine 25-minute flight from city of Villavicencio to the town of La Uribe in Meta province. The wreckage was found early on Thursday by a helicopter search party, which reported no signs of survivors. The civilian aircraft, owned by Nacional de Aviacion aviacompany, had been hired by the army to transport soldiers. Meta is a central Colombian province where leftist rebels and right-wing paramilitary gangs grow coca used to make the cocaine that fuels this country's 4-decade-old guerrilla war. The government is calling the crash an accident as there is no evidence that the plane came under attack from any of the illegal militias operating in the region. |

According to Tiger sources, one of their flight was attacked while returning after bombing the air force base and it has not returned to the base located somewhere in the Vanni. In the meantime, Air Force and Police in Anuradhapura told that they have received a report that a flight has crashed and fallen some where in Mihintale nearly 13 kilometers away from the air force base in Anuradhapura. Subsequently it was confirmed that a Bell 212 helicopter that went from the Air force base in search of the LTTE flights crashed due to engine failure near Mihintale and two gunners and two pilots died. Air force spokesperson confirmed that two MI 24 helicopter gunships have been damaged in the explosion. Reports also revealed that three Air force personnel were injured in the battle with the tigers and are hospitalized. The attack began at 3 a.m.The fighting lasted about two hours and the air force and military have jointly sent teams into the surrounding area to search for the attackers, and for the LTTE plane. Citing the official government statements of two Mi-24 helicopter gunships damaged and one Bell 212 gunship crash landing, the British newspaper, ‘The Telegraph’ also quoted ‘well-placed sources in Colombo’ as saying the damage was on a far greater scale than had been admitted. The LTTE attack had destroyed military planes and equipment worth more than $40 million, the paper reported Tuesday. Among the planes allegedly damaged or destroyed was a Beechcraft surveillance plane worth $28.5 million, two Mi-17 helicopters, two Mi-24 helicopters, three unmanned aerial vehicles, a K-8 jet and eight PD6 propeller trainer aircraft. |

Additional News: Causes of the Thai jet crash reported |
12.10.2007 - Dangerous wind conditions were a major cause of last month's Thai plane crash that killed 90 people in tourist haven Phuket, transport officials said Friday, adding human error could also be to blame. The transport ministry said analysis of black box flight data showed wind shear, a sudden change in wind speed or direction, was one of the reasons the One-Two-Go jet crashed in bad weather at Phuket airport on September 16. "Wind shear is definitely a part of the cause," said Chaisawasd Kittipornpaiboon, the Thai transport ministry's permanent secretary. "But it is not the only single reason for the accident," he said, adding that they were still collating information on the tragedy. 'It is not the only single reason for the accident' The comments came after two black-box flight recorders, recovered from the wreckage of the One-Two-Go jet, were decoded in the United States and returned to Thailand. Wind shear is a abrupt change in wind direction or speed that can throw a plane off course but then disappear just as quickly, leaving pilots struggling to keep the craft under control. Chaisawasd, who heads the panel investigating the crash, refused to rule out the possibility that human error was also to blame. The plane was carrying 130 people including crew and passengers, most of whom were foreign tourists. Air traffic controllers had warned the Indonesian pilot of wind shear as the McDonnell Douglas MD-82 plane operated by Thai budget carrier One-Two-Go came in to land in heavy rain. Moments later it skidded off the runway into a wooded embankment and broke up in flames, killing citizens from Thailand, France, Iran, Britain, Israel, the United States, Germany, Canada, Sweden, Australia and Indonesia. Over 100 survivors and victims' relatives have given authority to two US lawyers to represent them in an attempt to claim damages from Chicago-based Boeing, which took over plane maker McDonnell Douglas Corporation in 1997. The lawyers have said that the MD-82 model has crashed 13 times. //Xinhua |
By Lucy Williamson BBC News, Jakarta Monday, 22 October 2007 A plane crash in Indonesia which killed 21 people in March has been blamed on pilot error by the official inquiry. The Garuda Indonesia flight crashed on landing at Yogyakarta airport in March, and burst into flames. Australian diplomats and journalists were among the dead, leading to increased international pressure to find the causes of the disaster. Indonesia's transport safety committee said the pilot was going 60% faster than he should have been on landing. The report said the pilot ignored the aircraft's warning system, which sounded alarms 15 times during the approach. He also ignored calls from the co-pilot to go around and take the approach again. On landing, the plane over-shot the runway and burst into flames. Poor safety record Rescue vehicles at the airport were unable to reach to accident site and some did not have the right fire suppressant. The report said that these factors may have cost many lives. The involvement of the Australian diplomats and journalists led to increased international pressure to find the causes of the disaster. The panel has made a series of recommendations to improve airline safety in Indonesia. But the country has a poor track record of implementing safety procedures and transport disasters are common. |

Landing gear failed at Copenhagen airport 27.10.2007//15:55 GMT Denmark/Kopenhagen Bombardier, the Canadian regional aircraft maker, yesterday suffered a serious blow when SAS, the Scandinavian airline, said it would permanently stop flying Q400 turboprops after the third crash landing in a month caused by faulty landing gear. Bombardier won a spate of orders for the plane, also known as the Dash 8, only last week. The company insisted it was still safe to fly after confirming yesterday that an SAS flight from Bergen in Norway to Copenhagen, the Danish capital, had been involved in an incident on Saturday. |
The 70-seater plane, de Havilland Canada DHC-8-402 Q400, reg. № LN-RDI, carrying 44 passengers, crash-landed at Copenhagen airport when its main right-hand landing gear "failed to fully extend for landing", according to Bombardier. None of the passengers was injured. The group said: "There appears to be no relationship between this incident and previous SAS Q400 main landing-gear incidents." Television footage showed the plane tipping and swerving to the right before landing unscathed. Earlier this month Bombardier said around 90% of its Q400 fleet had returned to service after two previous incidents involving the SAS fleet of 27 in Lithuania and Denmark. It said it had been given the all-clear under Transport Canada's airworthiness directive. But Mats Jansson, SAS chief executive, said confidence in the plane had diminished considerably "and our customers are becoming increasingly doubtful about flying in this type of aircraft." He plans to replace the grounded turboprops with other types of aircraft in its fleet and leased planes. The airline was forced to cancel 52 flights yesterday and another 13 today. It said it was seeking compensation of around Skr500m from Bombardier for the three incidents. Bombardier, which has dispatched a product safety and technical team to Copenhagen to assist in the investigation into the accident, last week received an order worth $267m for 10 Q400s from an unidentified European airline and one order for up to 36 from the Australian flag-carrier Qantas for its QantasLink regional operation. The company has received 264 plane orders, with 164 delivered, and supplies 23 customers in Africa, the Asia-Pacific region, North America and Europe, including Flybe in Britain. The Exeter-based airline, which operates the world's biggest Q400 fleet, this year ordered a further 15 of the aircraft to take its fleet to 60. The Q400 is based on the old de Havilland range of Dash aircraft, and is billed as "spearheading the next generation of low cost carriers - the low cost regional carrier". The plane is also claimed by its makers to be 25% to 40% more fuel-efficient than its competitors and as fast as a jet on flights of up to 500 miles. The aircraft's engines are encased in nacelles built at Bombardier's Belfast plant, which employs around 5,000. |

Plane with Polish soldiers destroys guiding lights at Pyrzowice airport 27.10. 2007 A plane coming back from Beirut with Polish soldiers on board destroyed several dozen lights guiding the planes to the runway, which means that for at least three weeks the Pyrzowice airport, southern Poland may have problems with receiving the planes in bad weather. The accident happened on Saturday night. Boeing 737-800 (EC-HBM), hired by the UN to transport soldiers returning from the peace mission, with 114 Polish soldiers and 11 crew members on board, came too low while landing and destroyed guiding lights at a stretch of around 870m, but managed to land safely. The aircraft, operated by Air Europa, sustained damage to the nr.1 engine and flap fairings. Circumstances and causes of the accident are being investigated by the Air Accident Investigation Commission. |
