Two Russian air force fighters rehearsing acrobatic manoeuvres collided near Moscow today,
killing one of the pilots and sending the aircraft plummeting into holiday homes, a military official said.
The
Su-27 fighter aircraft were part of the elite Russian Knights flying group and had been preparing to perform at the Maks-2009 air show, the largest and most important exhibition for Russia's aerospace industry.
The jets collided near the Zhukovsky airfield, east of Moscow, where the air show opens on Tuesday.
The three pilots in the two aircraft managed to eject from the jets, but one was killed.
The other two were in a stable condition.
The Kremlin identified the dead pilot as the Russian Knights' commander, Colonel
Igor Tkachenko.
The two jets crashed into a row of houses near the airfield, setting three on fire and scattering debris over a wide area.
One woman on the ground was seriously injured and up to four others may have also been hurt. Later, on 21.08.2009, the injured woman died.

A small private
Piper PA-32R-300 plane (N71MC), owned by LCA Partnership, carrying three people and a New York tourist helicopter, Liberty Helicopter Sightseeing Tours Eurocopter AS 350 BA (N401LH), with six collided in midair and plunged into the Hudson River off Hoboken, N.J., opposite Manhattan’s West Side, just before noon on Saturday. All 9 people on board the two aircraft were killed, the authorities said.
Photo: Fox news
The cause of the accident was under investigation. But what perhaps thousands of people out on a crystalline summer day saw from both sides of the Hudson was a stunning, low-altitude accident in which the plane rolled up and into the helicopter, striking with a crack like thunder as the helicopter’s blades and one of the plane’s wings flew off, and then both aircraft fell and vanished into the river.
As witnesses watched from parks and balconies, three bodies were recovered, one floating in the water and two others from wreckage believed to be that of the helicopter, located by divers on the murky riverbed 30 feet down. The search for the plane was impeded by visibility of only two or three feet at the bottom.

Crash at Polish air show
kills 2 pilots

30.08.2009//11:17 GMT
Poland/ Radom

A Belarusian fighter jet crashed Sunday during an air show in central Poland, killing both pilots on board the two-seater plane, officials said.
The
Su-27 jet with registration 63 went down while performing maneuvers at a festival in Radom, 65 miles (105 kilometers) south of Warsaw.
The plane turning in the air, then dropping behind trees. A giant cloud of black smoke appeared on the horizon. The Su-27 was not near the tarmac or crowds attending the air show when it crashed.
The two Belarusian pilots were killed. A joint Polish-Belarusian panel of experts was investigating the cause.
When the plane began to lose altitude during a stunt flight, the pilots "did not eject and steered the plane away from the town, avoiding graver consequences at the cost of their lives," ministry spokesman Vyacheslav Remenchuk said.
He identified the pilots as Col. Alexander Morfitsky and Col. Alexander Zhuravlevich. He said Morfitsky was deputy commander of an air force unit in western Belarus, and Zhuravlevich was deputy commander of a fighter base.
