8 die in oilfield services
helicopter crash

04.01.2009/21:00 GMT
US/LA/Terrebonne Parish
near Houma Louisiana

The helicopter, operated by
PHI Inc., crashed Sunday afternoon shortly after taking off. Two pilots and seven passengers were aboard when the helicopter went down in rural Terrebonne Parish, about 100 miles southwest of New Orleans. The passengers worked for two Shell Oil Co. contractors and the company said they were on their way to its Gulf of Mexico platform.
The lone survivor was transported to a medical facility in suburban New Orleans, and was critical condition Sunday night. There was no immediate update on condition available Monday.
The helicopter is believed to have crashed about seven minutes after it took off at 3:02 p.m. EDT. There were scattered clouds and visibility was 10 miles at the time of the crash, and the crew reported no problems before the helicopter went down.
A short time after the crash, the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center in Panama City, Fla., received an electronic distress signal from the helicopter with the aircraft's tail number and GPS coordinates.
The center contacted PHI, which confirmed it couldn't locate the chopper.
The helicopter, a
Sikorsky S-76C (reg. N748P), would have had a voice recorder aboard and possibly a flight data recorder. NTSB investigators were expected to arrive later Monday at the crash site, to work with local authorities in the search for the recorder and other material. An NTSB investigator also was headed for PHI's offices to go through maintenance and crew records.
Lafayette-based PHI is a primary provider of helicopter services to oil and gas platforms that dot the coast of Louisiana. It also flies medical helicopters.
Workers typically are flown to and from their worksites from coastal flight bases.
PHI identified the dead as
Allen Boudreaux, of Ama, La.; Andrew Moricio and Ezequiel Cantu of Morgan City, La.; Randy Tarpley of Jonesville, La.; Jorey A. Rivero, of Bridge City, La.; Charles W. Nelson of Pensacola, Fla.; Thomas E. Ballenger of Eufaula, Ala. and Vyarl W. Martin of Hurst, Texas.
The injured man was Steven Yeltin of Floresville, Texas.
Ballenger and Martin were PHI pilots. Bourdreaux, Moricio, Cantu and Tarpley worked for Dynamic Industries of New Iberia, La. The other passengers worked for MMR Offshore Services, Inc., part of Baton Rouge-based MMR Group Inc.

Passenger jet plunges
into Hudson River

15.01.2009//20:31 GMT
USA/New Yourk/near Manhattan

The US Airways flight 1549 that took off Thursday at 3:26 p.m. from La Guardia Airport in New York landed in the Hudson River five minutes later, where it remains mostly submerged. Ferries and other boats converged to help with a rescue effort, as the plane drifted south in the water. From 155 crew and passengers 78 people were hurt, but everyone on the plane has survived. One woman suffered two broken legs, others were evaluated for hypothermia, bruises and other minor injuries.
The Airbus A320 (N106US), may have hit a flock of birds, according to a FAA report, and then descended. The pilot,  tried to return to the airport when the plane fell into the Hudson.
The pilot, identified as
Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III of Danville, Calif., "was phenomenal," passenger Joe Hart said. "He landed it - I tell you what, the impact wasn't a whole lot more than a rear-end (collision). It threw you into the seat ahead of you. Both engines cut out and he actually floated it into the river," he said.
New York governor David Paterson praised the efforts of the "heroic" pilot. "
This was potentially a very tragic incident,'' he said. "This pilot was somehow without any engines able to land the plane.''

Rescuers find French
helicopter wreckage

Gabon/ Libreville/ off the coast

The wreckage of a French helicopter
Cougar AS 532 that crashed on Saturday with 10 soldiers on board was found off the coast of Gabon on Sunday at a depth of 35 metres.
The Cougar transport helicopter was carrying 10 soldiers, including four crew members and six special forces paratroopers, when it went down in the sea shortly after take-off from the French seaplane carrier
La Foudre on Saturday.
The January 17-21 bilateral manoeuvres called
'Operation N'Gari' involved 600 French soldiers and 120 Gabonese troops maneuvering in the military drill known as Baptise Ngeri. The soldiers were backed by Cougar and Fennec helicopters to coordinate maritime safety operations with UN peacekeepers at Bouna airport, in the Ivory Coast. In the joint exercise soldiers were to be parachuted onto predetermined targets including Nyonie.
Eight soldiers died in the crash, 2 survived, one of them heavily injured.
Rescuers were trying to find a survivor on Sunday off the coast of Nyonie, a town located half-way between Libreville and the port city of Port-Gentil, and divers were to be sent in to locate the wreckage.
President Nicolas Sarkozy ordered that "all available means in the area be immediately deployed to find the soldiers who were on board" and dispatched Defence Minister Herve Morin to Gabon.
There was no immediate information on the cause of the crash and the general staff said an enquiry would be carried out.
The helicopter went down at 8:08 pm (19:08 GMT) shortly after taking off from La Foudre that was cruising 50 kilometres (30 miles) off the Gabonese coast.
The ship set off the alert and went to the scene of the crash with its own rescuers who picked up the injured within half an hour.
Oil giant Total sent three vessels to help in the rescue effort. France has around 1,000 troops in Gabon, a former French colony, with one of four permanent bases in Africa.

US/TX/Lubbock - A FedEx cargo plane
ATR-42 (N902FX) crashed during landing Tuesday at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport.
Crew members, a 52-year-old Portland, Ore.,
man and a woman, 26 of Tacoma, Wash., were taken to a hospital but have been released, a spokeswoman at University Medical Center said.
The crash happened at 4:37 a.m. Tuesday as the
ATR-42 twin-turboprop aircraft, performing flight CFS8284, was arriving from Fort Worth Alliance Arport in a freezing mist. The plane hit the ground in grass about 300 feet from the end of the runway, airport director James Loomis said.
"They apparently bounced onto the pavement, skidded down the pavement and veered off to the right," he said. "There is a trail of jet fuel from their impact area, which was in the grass, to where it sits now to the right of the runway north of the terminal."
Officials say the plane caught fire and the blaze was quickly extinguished.
The plane was operated by
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho-based Empire Airways under contract with Memphis, Tenn.-based FedEx Corp.
