Australian mining magnate Ken Talbot and five other Australian mining executives are among 11 people reported to have died after their aircraft went missing over West Africa.
Executives from three Australian mining companies – Gindalbie, Sundance Resources and Western Areas – including Mr Talbot, a Sundance director and one of Australia’s richest men, went missing on a flight from Cameroon to the Congo Republic. The plane, a CASA C-212 twin turboprop, was en route from the Cameroon capital of Yaounde to Yangadou in the Republic of Congo on Saturday when contact was lost. The aircraft had been chartered by Western Australian-based mining company Sundance Resources for a tour of its Mbalam iron ore project in northwest Congo-Brazzaville. Six Australians, two British, two French and one US national were on the twin turboprop CASA-212 plane. The crashed plane, a twin-engine CASA 212-300, operated by charter company Aero-Service, has one of the world's worst safety records, with 76 of about 600 built crashing. Registered TN-AFD, the charter plane was built in 1990 and was the 398th off the production line. Geoff Wedlock, chairman of Gindalbie and Sundance, four other Sundance directors, and Craig Oliver, chief financial officer of Western Areas, were among those missing. Sundance asked the Australian Stock Exchange to suspend trading in its shares on Monday. The Sundance board had travelled to Cameroon to conclude negotiations over the mining lease at its Mbalam deposits, which straddle the border between Cameroon and Congo. The project is worth billions of dollars over its 25 year lifespan. Sundance has a 90 per cent stake in Cameroon Iron Ore Company (Camiron S.A.) which owns more than 1,000 square miles of fields with estimated reserves of 2.2 million tons of mineral resources. Brisbane-based Mr Talbot, 59, one of Australia's best known mining identities, made his fortune in coal mining in Queensland. |
