Russia plane crash kills 45

Russia/ Kareliya/ Petrozavodsk

A
Tupolev 134A-3, registered RA-65691, was destroyed in an accident near Petrozavodsk Airport (PES), Russia.
Forty-four occupants died in the accident; eight survived. One of the people who died was a Swedish rescue worker on his way to a conference on rescue cooperation in the Barents Region. One of the people who died was from the Netherlands, according to the Emergencies Ministry. Two victims were Ukrainian. There was also a family of four with dual Russian-American citizenship. One of crew-members was from Belarus
Later a 10-year-old boy of the injured died.
RusAir Flight 9605 had departed Moscow-Domodedovo (DME) at 22:24 on a domestic service to Petrozavodsk. The flight was operated by RusAir on behalf of RusLine. Flight RLU-243 could not be operated by RusLine's Canadair Regional Jets because it lacked the seating capacity needed for the service between Domodedovo and Petrozavodsk. Therefore RusAir was chartered to operate the flight using a Tu-134. The Tupolev crash-landed on a highway while on final approach to runway 01. It broke up and came to rest about 390 meters to the right of the runway's extended centerline and 570 m short of the runway threshold.
An official from the Aviation Accident Investigation Commission has made a statement admitting that the landing lights at Petrozavodsk airport were off when the plane approached to land, and that this together with adverse weather conditions could have caused the tragedy. The lights outage may have been caused by the airliner itself. The Tupolev went 150 to 200 meters off course as it approached the runway and hit the high-voltage power line. The collision cut the power supply, and it took several seconds for the backup supply to switch on. Meanwhile, the aircraft hit several treetops with its wing and crashed, the official said.
