Cargo plane breaks in two
at Brussels airport

25.05.2008 //11:30 GMT
A large cargo plane crashed and broke apart close to a row of houses while trying to abort a takeoff Sunday at Brussels airport.
The
Boeing 747-200 skidded to a halt in a field at the end of a runway around 1:30 p.m. (11:30 GMT). Four of the five crew members on board the plane, operated by U.S.-based cargo carrier Kalitta Air, were slightly injured and were hospitalized, said Jan Van der Cruysse, spokesman at Brussels Airport.
"The plane is very seriously damaged," he said.
The aircraft (reg.
N704CK) cracked near the tail and by the wings when it slid 325 yards past the end of runway 220. The plane, full of fuel, stopped just five and a half yards from a rail line and 550 yards from houses on the edge of the town of Zaventem.
"I just heard a boom, and then I saw the plane go by the cemetery and the plane seems to be going off, sliding off, and then I heard a second boom, that's all I saw," told local resident.
Rail services to and from the airport were suspended as a safety precaution, but the crash did not affect other flights at the airport, Van der Cruysse said.
The plane did not catch fire. The pilot told rescue authorities he heard a loud noise while trying to take off. It was not clear what had caused the crash.
Experts planned to examine the aircraft and remove the plane's cockpit voice recorder, or "black box," to find out what caused the crash, officials said.
Firefighters coated the wings of the plane with fire retardant foam because the plane was still full of fuel, the mayor said.
Some of the fuel had leaked from the left wing, but the spill was being contained and cleaned up.
The plane had been scheduled to fly to Bahrain.
The plane was carrying cargo weighing 76 tons, over half of which was diplomatic mail. Other cargo included a car and batteries.
The plane is owned by Kalitta Air, a cargo carrier based at Willow Run Airport near Ypsilanti, Michigan, and it made regular flights from Brussels.

An
Antonov-32 suffered an engine failure moments after take-off from the eastern town of Goma, according to an agent of the owners, the private Great Lakes Business Company (GLBC).
The pilot turned back and made an emergency landing, the aircraft careering off the runway before coming to a halt next to a parked helicopter, a United Nations spokeswoman added.
"There were no passengers on-board, just the
crew who suffered slight injuries," the GLBC agent added on condition of anonymity.
"A catastrophe was narrowly avoided," said Sylvie van den Wildenberg of the local UN DR Congo (MONUC) mission.
"The plane halted just a few metres (yards) from a helicopter and not far from another plane."
The Antonov caught fire moments after the crew evacuated it, the UN spokeswoman added later. "MONUC firefighters were able to control the fire before it could spread through the whole plane."
The owner of GLBC, Congolese businessman Douglas Mpano, has been formally grounded since 2005 by the UN Security Council for violating an arms embargo in the country.
His company has also been subject to UN sanctions since March 2007, suspected of transporting arms and munitions.

Chile's police chief,
10 others killed in crash

29.05.2008/19:10 GMT
Panama/Panama City - Chile's national police chief and 10 others were killed Thursday when the aging Panamanian government helicopter Bell UH-1N Huey (SAN-100) they were riding in crashed into a three-story building in Panama City at 14:10 local time.
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet rushed to Santiago from northern Chile when she learned of the death of
Gen. Jose Alejandro Bernales, 59. He was on an official visit to Panama with his wife, Teresa Bianchini.
Also killed were Chilean police commanders
Oscar Tapia and Ricardo Orozco, Capt. Mauricio Fuenzalida, and Tapia's wife, Carolina Reyes.
Panamanian Interior Minister Daniel Delgado said five Panamanian officials also died in the crash, and one local policeman was injured. They were
Maria Angelica Celis, Gerardo Polanco, Calixto Cedeno, Juan Delgado and Reynaldo Cerna. The only survivor is the Panamanian Hernaldo Carrasco who is currently at Santo Tomas Hospital in Panama City.
It was not immediately clear what caused the crash.
Thick, black smoke rose from the damaged building, which appeared to be a warehouse. Police cordoned off the scene, an area of the capital packed with clothing stores and small restaurants.
The 12-seat helicopter was
built in 1973. It had been used once by former president Gen. Omar Torrijos, the current president's father, National Police spokesman Eduardo Lin Yuen said. Omar Torrijos died in an airplane crash in Panama in 1981.
Chile decreed three days of national mourning, and flags were lowered to half-staff.
Bachelet called Gen. Bernales, who had served as chief since 2005, "a great, great police director, an important support for the government on order and security matters."
"I am very, very sad. I feel a great pain," Bachelet said.

Honduras/Tegucigalpa

The Miami-bound jetliner (reg. EI-TAF) overshot a runway, raced onto a busy street and slammed into an embankment in the Honduran capital Friday, killing the pilot, a passenger and a motorist on the ground. More than 75 people were injured, including Brazil's ambassador to Honduras, Brian Michael Fraser Neele. Police said he was being treated at a private hospital and his wife was missing. The nose of the Grupo Taca Airbus 320, which was landing with 124 people on board, smashed into an embankment and its fuselage buckled and broke in places, trapping the pilot and co-pilot inside. Rescuers had to pry open part of the wreckage to get them out, but the pilot didn't survive. Passenger Harry Brautigam, a Nicaraguan who headed a regional development bank, died of heart failure shortly after the crash. The body of a man trapped under the plane's wreckage was believed to be a taxi driver. More than 2,000 gallons (7,500 liters) of fuel spilled out of the jet, and authorities tried to clear away hundreds of onlookers while they hosed down cars trapped under the plane's left engine. "The airplane's fuel could cause an explosion, and that would be an even bigger tragedy," Security Ministry spokesman Ivan Mejia said. Many passengers walked away from the accident. Roberto Sosa, 34, told The Associated Press: "We landed ... and suddenly I heard a really strong, loud impact." Mirtila Lopez, 71, said she was talking to another passenger when the plane "left the runway, hit electric cables from a nearby street and then got stuck in the side of a small ravine." The plane left San Salvador at 8:30 a.m. local time carrying passengers mostly from Honduras, El Salvador and Costa Rica. It was scheduled to stop briefly in Tegucigalpa and in San Pedro Sula before heading to Miami. It was unclear what caused the crash, but weather may have been a factor. The runway was wet with rain from Tropical Storm Alma. There have been calls for years to replace aging Toncontin International Airport, whose short runway, primitive navigation equipment and neighboring hills make it one of the world's more dangerous international airports. The airport was built on the southern edge of hilly Tegucigalpa in 1948 with a runway less than 5,300 feet (1,600 meters) long -- shorter than that of a small field such as Municipal Airport in Goldsboro, N.C. The altitude of some 3,300 feet (1,000 meters) forces pilots to use more runway on landings and takeoffs than they would at sea level. And because of the hills, pilots have to make an unusually steep approach. President Manuel Zelaya said he was talking to his Cabinet about moving flights to the U.S. military's Soto Cano air base about 40 miles (65 kilometers) north of the capital.
It has the best runway in the country at 2,700 meters (8,850 feet) long and 50 meters (165 feet) wide and is used most for drug surveillance planes. "I've flown a lot, and pilots have to work really hard to arrive successfully at Toncontin," Zelaya said. In 1997, a U.S. Air Force C-130 cargo plane overshot the runway at Toncontin and rolled 200 yards (180 meters) before bursting into flames on a major boulevard, killing three people aboard. The worst crash associated with the airport came in 1989 when a Honduran airliner hit a nearby hill, killing 133 people.

An aging helicopter had engine trouble when it crashed into a building in the Panamanian capital, killing Chile's national police chief and 10 other people, aviation officials said Monday. A technical review found "evidence that motor No. 1 was not operating normally at the time of the accident," Panama's Civil Aviation Authority said in a statement. It gave no details on the problem with the engine, but said both motors would be sent to the manufacturer for analysis.
