Indonesian plane crash kills 98
19.05.2009//23:30 GMT Indonesia/East Java/Magetan/Geplak village
An Indonesian military plane carrying troops and their families crashed into
a row of houses and burst into flames Wednesday,
killing at
least
98 people, the
latest in a string of accidents plaguing the beleaguered air force.
Black smoke billowed in the air as soldiers carried the injured past the
burning wreckage of the
C-130 Hercules
- its tail resting upside down in a rice paddy and the rest of the fuselage
scattered and charred. The C-130 Hercules with identification number
A-1325 crashed into a rice field, a few minutes before landing at Iswahyudi
military airbase. The plane was carrying 110 passengers and crew including
soldiers and their families, among them children. The Hercules was in a
routine trip from Jakarta`s Halim Perdanakusuma airport to Iswahyudi airport
in East Java, Makassar in South Sulawesi and the most-eastern province of
Papua. The dead victims included 11 crew members, a ranking Air Force
officer, Air Commodore Harsono, and his wife, and three residents of Geplak
village whose houses were hit by the ill-fated Hercules plane when it
crashed.
Fifteen of the passengers and crew
survived the crash. All of them
were injured.
Five of the survivors sustained serious head injuries and brain concussion.
Eyewitnesses spoke of a big explosion before the plane came down near the
town of Madiun.
"I heard at least two big explosions and saw flashes of fire inside the
plane," a man working in a nearby rice field said. "The wing snapped off
and fell to the ground," he said.
Another local said nuts and bolts also fell from the sky.
One survivor said it felt like the plane's engines just stopped and then the
aircraft began to break apart in mid-air. Indonesian President Susilo
Bambang Yudhoyono expressed his "deepest condolences" to the families of
those killed but urged against jumping to conclusions about what caused the
crash. |

11.05.2009//09:45 GMT Kenya/Kapsabet - A split second decision by the
pilot of a police helicopter to crash-land on buildings saved a high-powered
team of top government officials, including Police Commissioner Hussein Ali

The decision also averted a serious accident that may have killed people in
a huge crowd that had just attended a public rally addressed by two Cabinet
ministers in Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Kapsabet town. When he realised that
the helicopter was losing power at a critical stage during lift off, Captain
Patrick Mugane considered two quick options: To return to the stadium where
a huge crowd had gathered and risk the possibility of crash-landing on
people, or crash on buildings. He chose to land on the buildings in a prison
farm and saved all 28 people on board and the huge crowd on the ground,
which included Cabinet ministers George Saitoti and Chris Obure, among other
dignitaries. |
