|Airbus A-320
|Airbus jet crashes in test flight
An Air New Zealand passenger jet on a test flight with seven crew aboard has crashed into the sea south of France, killing at least two people.
Rescuers have found the body of two crew members but five others are still missing.
Air New Zealand confirmed today that one of its Airbus A320-232 aircraft on lease to a Europe-based company, crashed into the Mediterranean Sea.
Air New Zealand chief executive Rob Fyfe said the aircraft was leased to another operator and was due to return to service with Air New Zealand next month.
The aircraft was on a test flight and took off from the southern French city of Perpignan.
It crashed into the sea east of Perpignan and the wreckage had been found.
A witness told he saw the plane dive abruptly and plunge into the Mediterranean sea.
"I could see it was an airliner because I saw two large engines. There was no fire, nothing," the witness, a local policeman, told France Info radio.
"It was flying straight, then it turned brutally towards the ground. I said to myself it will never pull out and there was a big spray of water," he said.
The aircraft was believed to be 45m deep in the sea and divers would try and recover the black box tomorrow.
Some wreckage was floating on the surface, but the pieces were "very difficult to find because of the big waves and the dark".
A major rescue operation was under way, with a surveillance plane, two rescue helicopters and five ships scouring the seas around the crash site 3.5 mls from the shore.
The crashed Airbus A320 had been undergoing maintenance checks at Perpignan airport before it took off on a test flight.
The aircraft was at Perpignan being repainted in Air New Zealand colors prior to handover on Dec. 1, Fyfe said. Air New Zealand staff were in France to collect the jetliner, he said.
``The role of our team was to observe the performance of the aircraft and validate that it met Air New Zealand operating standards and return-from-lease requirements,'' Fyfe said. ``All the ground checks had been completed, the maintenance had been completed and it was on an acceptance flight.''
Unconfirmed reports indicate that the airplane involved was ZK-OJL. This plane had just been returned to Air New Zealand after flying for XL Airways as D-AXLA.
Air New Zealand has released the names of four of its staff presumed to have died when an Airbus A320 crashed into the Mediterranean off France. The four Air NZ staff are captain Brian Horrell from Auckland; Murray White, an Auckland-based engineer; Michael Gyles, from Christchurch and also an engineer; and Noel Marsh, another Christchurch-based engineer.
The fifth New Zealander, Jeremy Cook, presumed to have died when the Airbus plunged into the sea was a Civil Aviation Authority inspector.
Two others on board were pilots from XL Airways, the German firm which leased the aircraft from Air New Zealand for the past two years.
The accident occurred a day before the 29th anniversary of the Mount Erebus disaster in 1979 when an Air New Zealand McConnell Douglas DC-10 sight-seeing flight (Flight_901) over Antarctica crashed and killed all 257 passengers and crew.
