Turkish plane crash in Amsterdam 25.02.2009//09:31 GMT Netherlands/Amsterdam A Turkish Airlines plane has crashed on landing at Amsterdam's Schiphol international airport, killing nine people and injuring 84, six critically. The plane, carrying 127 passengers, 1-year-old baby and seven crew, crashed short of the runway near the A9 highway. It broke into three pieces, but did not catch fire. The killed are 4 Americans and 5 Turks.Three of those killed are crew members. Dutch officials say most of the passengers on board were Turkish and Dutch nationality. It remains unclear why the plane, en route from Istanbul, crashed. The Boeing 737-800 aircraft, with registration TC-JGE, came down at 1031 local time (0931 GMT), several hundred yards (metres) short of the runway. It had left Istanbul's Ataturk Airport at 0622 GMT. Investigators have found the flight data recorders from the plane. They will be sent for expert analysis in France. Emergency services spokeswoman Ineke van der Zande told an earlier news conference that six people were in a critical condition and 25 were severely wounded. She said 84 people altogether had been taken using 60 ambulances to 11 hospitals in the surrounding area. Earlier, Candan Karlitekin, head of Turkish Airlines' board of directors, told reporters in Turkey the plane had been properly maintained. Turkish Transport Minister Binali Yildirim said it had been "a miracle" that there were not more casualties, AP reports. "The fact that the plane landed on a soft surface and that there was no fire helped keep the number of fatalities low," he said. One passenger aboard the plane, Kerem Uzel, told Turkish news channel NTV that the plane's landing had been announced when they were at an altitude of 600m (2,000ft). "We suddenly descended a great distance as if the plane fell into turbulence. The plane's tail hit the ground... It slid from the side of the motorway into the field." One week ago, an employees' union accused Turkish Airlines of "inviting disaster" by ignoring aircraft maintenance. The Turkish Civil Aviation Union alleged that Turkish Airlines "is ignoring the most basic function of flight safety, which is plane maintenance services." "The company administration does not understand the consequences of ripping people from their jobs and inviting a disaster." The union, which represents 12,000 Turkish Airline employees, is involved in an ugly dispute with the company's management. |

Nosegear of British Airways jet with 71 aboard collapes, sending plane scraping across tarmac
13.02.2009//20:00 GMT UK/England/London city airport - The nosewheel of a British Airways passenger jet collapsed with a loud bang as it landed Friday evening at London City Airport, sending the plane scraping across the tarmac with 71 people aboard, officials and witnesses said. All aboard escaped by emergency slides, but one person was taken to a hospital with a minor injury. The plane was arriving from Amsterdam about 8 p.m. when the front landing gear failed and the front of the plane slammed onto the runway and skidded, officials and firefighters said. The airline said it did not yet know what caused the landing gear problem on the Avro 146 RJ100 plane (G-BXAR) which had been carrying 67 passengers and four crew members. The government sent three investigators to the scene. There was a few scrapes and cuts due to hitting the asphalt. In addition to the person who received hospital treatment, four others were treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Plane crashes with 28 aboard; 24 dead, 4 survivors 07.02.2009//17:50 GMT Brazil/AM/Manacapuru river A small plane headed to the jungle city of Manaus crashed Saturday in Brazil's Amazon with 28 people on board. Four survivors have been found. The plane, operated by Manaus Aerotaxi company, was being used as an "air taxi" to ferry passengers between cities in the thick jungle when it crashed into the Manacapuru river about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southwest of Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state. Rescuers were at the scene and were searching for survivors, but so far just the four have been found. "The survivors said they saw one of the plane's motors stop," Daniel Guedes, a police official in the city of Manacapuru near the crash site, told. The plane had left the city of Coari, 225 miles (360 kilometers) southwest of Manaus. The flight's destination was Manaus. A spokeswoman for Brazil's Civil Aeronautics Agency -- known as ANAC -- in Brasilia gave the plane's tail numbers as PT-SEA. According to ANAC's Web site, the plane with that tail number is an Embraer EMB-110P1 model, a small twin turbo-prop plane that carries up to 21 people. Brazil's Center for Investigation and Prevention of Flight Accidents, or Cenipa, said the pilot had tried to turn the plane around near the site of the crash. "The plane lost radio contact near the city of Manacapuru, but had indicated that it was turning around and returning to Coari," said a Cenipa spokeswoman. "The pilot gave no reason for the action." The spokeswoman said the area where the crash occurred had seen rainy conditions throughout the day. Brazilian aviation officials, said the pilot reported to air controllers in Manaus shortly before the crash that the plane had encountered driving rain. The Cenipa official said the four survivors were in good condition. The plane was full of members of one family heading to Manaus to celebrate a relative's birthday. |

Four killed in mid-air plane crash 11.02.2009 UK/Wales/Kenfig Reserve near the seaside resort of Porthcawl - Two teenage air cadets, who were also cousins, have been killed alongside their RAF instructors in a mid-air plane collision in South Wales. The girls and their tutors died when the two aircraft they were in crashed above sand dunes near Porthcawl. It is thought the twin-seater Grob Tutor T.1 planes clipped each other's wings. The accident happened less than half an hour after the group set off on a round trip from nearby RAF St Athan, in the Vale of Glamorgan. The "flight experience" was designed to give the girls a taste of being in a light aircraft. The planes came down at two separate sites, with at least one of them on fire. Those who died were two members of the RAF and two Air Training Corps cadets. THE mother of one of the girls killed in yesterday's double RAF plane crash had already suffered the death of two of her children, it emerged today. Cousins Nikkita Marie Walters, 14, and Katie-Jo Davies, 13, both pupils at Tonyrefail Comprehensive School, perished alongside their RAF instructors, Hylton Price, 63, from Bridgend, and 24-year-old Andrew Marsh, from Penarth, when two RAF Grob Tutor training aircraft collided over Kenfig nature reserve, near Porthcawl, on Wednesday morning. Today it emerged that Ridgena Mills, Katie-Jo's mother, had already lost a daughter to leukaemia, while her son had died from cot death. Debris from the wreckage was strewn across a wide area. A full investigation has been launched by the Air Accidents Investigation Board, South Wales Police and the Ministry of Defence. |

Plane crash near Buffalo kills 50 13.02.2009//03:20 GMT US/NY/Buffalo/Clarence Center A commuter aircraft crashed as it was preparing to land in Buffalo, N.Y., late Thursday night, killing 50 people, including the widow of a man killed in the Sept. 11 attacks, according to reports. Continental Connection Flight 3407 from Newark, N.J., to Buffalo was operated by Colgan Air, a unit of Pinnacle Airlines. The crash occurred around 10:20 p.m. as the plane was approaching Buffalo Niagara International Airport, killing 49 people on board and one person on the ground. There were 44 passengers, 4 crew-members on board and an off-duty airline pilot, Captain Joseph Zuffoletto, as well as. Colgan Air said the crewmembers on board the flight were Captain Marvin Renslow, First Officer Rebecca Shaw, and flight attendants Matilda Quintero and Donna Prisco. The plane was a 74-seat turboprop, de Havilland Canada DHC-8-402 Q400 (Dash-8) with registration number N200WQ, made by Canadian-based Bombardier Inc. No distress call Laura Brown, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said there was no distress call in the seconds before the crash. "It just dropped off the radar," she said, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. Erie County executive Chris Collins had said at a news conference earlier that the plane, Continental Airlines Flight 3407, crashed about five minutes before it was due to land. About a dozen houses were evacuated, and a limited state of emergency was declared, he said. Ted Lopatkiewicz, a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, said that the plane went down in light snow, according to the Times report. 9/11 connection One of the victims of the crash was the widow of a man killed in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the Buffalo News reported. Beverly Eckert had been traveling to Buffalo for a celebration of what would have been her husband's 58th birthday, relatives told the paper. Eckert's husband, Sean Rooney, was in the south tower of the World Trade Center when it collapsed. Ice concerns After the accident, at least two pilots were heard on air traffic control messages saying they had been picking up ice on their wings. "We've been getting ice since 20 miles south of the airport," one said. Ice on the wings of a plane can alter aerodynamics and interfere with lift and handling. In general, smaller planes like the Dash 8, which uses a system of pneumatic de-icing boots, are more susceptible to icing problems than larger commuter planes that use a system to warm the wings. The boots, a rubber membrane stretched over the surface, are filled with compressed air to crack any ice that builds up. Black boxes recovered Federal investigators Friday retrieved the "black boxes" — the flight data and cockpit voice recorders — that could shed light on what went wrong, but they said the smoldering debris was still too hot to remove bodies. The recorders were on their way to Washington for examination. The Department of Homeland Security said there was no indication of terrorism. The 74-seat Q400 Bombardier aircraft, registered on April 12, 2008, was delayed almost two hours before departing Newark, N.J. Colgan Air operates feeder flights for larger airlines, including Continental Airlines Inc. Colgan was launched in 1991 as a regional airline with headquarters in Manassas, Va., according to its Web site. |

Helicopter Crash Kills 13 in Chile 15.02.2009/19:05 GMT Chile/Region del Maule/near Chanco Thirteen people, including a dozen firefighters, aged around 18 to 25, were killed Sunday when a helicopter crashed in a region of south-central Chile that is grappling with a rash of forest fires, regional authorities said. The helicopter Bell UH-1H-BF Iroquois with registration CC-CBW and c/n 10810, which belongs to Flight Service and was rented by Celco, a forestry company that is owned by the conglomerate Empresas Copec, crashed in the Maule region about 185 miles south of Santiago, the capital. A firefighter who went to the scene said that he and his team found two bodies about 50 yards from the wreckage. Parts of the helicopter were still burning, he said. The National Forestry Corporation, Chile’s equivalent of a National Park Service, said the firefighters had been on their way to put out a fire at a eucalyptus plantation when the helicopter crashed. The pilot, Canala (39), had been granted permission to work on the firefighting detail before he went to his next assignment at the Chilean air force war college, El Universal said. Previously, he served as pilot for Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, flying his last mission for her to Brazil and back in December. Before that, Canala was the co-pilot for President Ricardo Lagos, who served from 2000 to 2006. An emergency official said that there was a dense mist in the area and that there was light rain at the time of the crash. |

All 18 survive helicopter crash off Scotland 18.02.2009//UK/off Scotland/near ETAP Field - All 18 people on a helicopter which ditched in the North Sea last night were saved in a dramatic rescue that coastguards have compared to the "miracle on the Hudson" in New York last month. An Eurocopter EC225 Super Puma 2 helicopter with registration number G-REDU and c/n 2690 carrying workers to a BP oil production platform went down 125 miles (200 km) east of Aberdeen at 6.40pm in heavy seas and poor visibility. The aircraft landed just 500 metres short of the platform in a swell of up to 3 metres and in low cloud. People on board the oil platform raised the alarm when they saw it plunge horizontally into the water. The helicopter, owned by Bond Offshore Helicopters Ltd which has a contract to ferry BP's oil workers to and from the mainland, floated because of air bags which inflated on impact with the water, and the 16 passengers and two crew escaped into two inflatable life rafts which they linked together. Rescuers rushing to the scene saw life jacket lights in the water and three flares alight. Signals were also picked up from locator beacons in the passengers' life jackets. A Nimrod aircraft was dispatched by the Air Rescue Co-ordination Centre at RAF Kinloss to help in the search, along with a rescue helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth . Another helicopter from Bond, based on a nearby rig, arrived to winch three of the crew to safety on the Etap rig for which they were originally heading. The downdraft proved too strong to rescue the remaining 15 and a lifeboat was sent from a nearby supply ship, Caledonian Victory, and the rest were taken there, with minor injuries. |

Black day for the Colombian aviation 18.02.2009 1. At least eight people were injured when a tear gas grenade accidentally exploded inside a police DC-3 airplane (PNC-0211), causing the aircraft to break in two, at the Medellin airport in northwestern Colombia, police said Wednesday. The plane was scheduled to transport 27 officers to western Choco province. The explosion occurred at 3:10 p.m. (20:10 GMT) at the Olaya Herrera airport in Medellin, capital of Antioquia province, after the aircraft arrived from Bogota to pick up the anti-riot officers and take them to Choco. To conduct the investigation into the incident, Gens. Guillermo Aranda and Alvaro Caro Melendez, the country's anti-drug inspector and director, were dispatched to Medellin. “According to the first medical evaluations, four of the injured, who were taken to the Medellin Policlinica and the Clinica de las Americas in that city, had serious injuries, while the other four only showed symptoms of being dazed,” said Gen. Rodriguez, the commander of the Medellin police. The plane was going to transport officers with the Mobile Anti-riot Squadron, or Esmad, to Quibdo, the capital of Choco, where on Thursday a civil strike is planned, police said. The accident forced the temporary shutdown of operations in the terminal area, which is located in the Medellin urban zone. |

2. The incident came hours after five Colombian air force personnel died when their plane crashed on a training flight in a rural portion of central Caldas province, about 8 a.m. local time (13:00 GMT). That plane, a retrofitted Douglas AC-47, which was being used as a so-called “ghost plane” for undercover operations and reconnaissance flights against the drug traffickers and leftist rebels, burst into flames on impact. The airplane had taken off from an army airport in Puerto Salgar, Cundinamarca to perform a training mission, but crashed because of mechanical failure, authorities say. The airplane, an AC-47 (FAC-1670), crashed in a village called El Purnio, no more than 5 mile from the Palanquero-German Olano airbase.
