Russian jumbo jet crashes,
no survivors 13.09.2008//23:13 GMT Russia/ Perm A Boeing 737-500 jet (VP-BKO) flown by OAO Aeroflot's Aeroflot Nord unit crashed in the central Russian city of Perm, killing all 88 passengers and crew. Flight SU821, en route from Moscow's Sheremetyevo Airport, crashed on its descent at 3:10 a.m. Moscow time, Aeroflot said in a press release. The 16-year-old plane lost radio contact at an altitude of 1,100 meters and was completely destroyed in the crash near a railroad. The dead included 7 Azerbaijan citizens, 5 Ukrainians, and one passenger from France, the United States, Germany, Turkey, Italy and China , according to a list on the Emergency Situations Ministry's Web site. Colonel General Gennady Troshev, 61, former commander of Russian forces in Chechnya and adviser to former President Vladimir Putin, was among the dead. The leased Boeing plane was built in 1992 and was formerly operated by Xiamen Airlines in China, Aeroflot said. Two flight recorders have been recovered from the wreckage. President Dmitry Medvedev today expressed his condolences to the relatives and friends of the passengers and crew. State-run Aeroflot is offering to take relatives to Perm later today on a charter flight, the carrier said in an e-mailed statement. The family of each victim will receive 2 million rubles ($78,000), Aeroflot said. The flight data recorders have been found, and handed over to the Interstate Aviation Committee, which will decode it. The pilot of a Russian airliner failed to follow controllers' instructions just before his jet crashed, killing 88 people, one controller has said. Irek Bikbov, who was guiding the Boeing 737-500 as it prepared to land, said it climbed instead of dropping altitude and veered left, instead of right. An eyewitness described how the plane had caught fire while still airborne and had hurtled downwards "like a falling comet." |
Boeing,

17 feared dead as aid plane
crashes in Congo 01.09.2008// 17 people were killed when a humanitarian aid flight crashed on a ridge in eastern Congo . The Beechcraft 1900C plane (reg. ZS-OLD), operated by CemAir under contract with Air Serv, was en route from Kisangani to Bukavu on Monday afternoon, September 1. The plane was on a flight from Kinshasa to Mbandaka, Kisangani and Bukavu when it crashed into a steep ridge. The aircraft departed Kisangani at 12:56 and the last known radio contact was made ten minutes inbound to Bukavu in heavy rain. The accident occurred on approach to the Bukavu airport. While the cause is as yet unknown, heavy rains may have been a factor. The aircraft was found early Tuesday morning on a steep ridge eight miles northwest of Bukavu. Recovery efforts are underway in search of the two crew members and 15 passengers on board. The victims included a Canadian member of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), an Indian employed by the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid, a French national and a national of neighbouring Congo who worked for Paris-based Medecins Sans Frontiers (MSF - Doctors Without Borders). The others on the plane were all from the DRC. According to the UN, four worked for the UNDP, three for the non-government organisation Handicap International and four were civil servants working in the DRC parliament. Air Serv International - based in Warrenton, VA, USA - describes itself as a not-for-profit aviation organization that supports humanitarian programs worldwide. No Air Serv personnel were involved in the crash. The plane was being flown by a South African commercial company, Cem Air. “I’ve cleared it with God. If something should happen to me … it should happen.” These chilling words were the last that South African pilot Rudi Knoetze said to his grandmother after she warned him against returning to the Democratic Republic of Congo. The other pilot was a Briton. |

DJ AM And Travis Barker Critically Injured In Private Plane Crash The crash took place just before midnight on Friday and involved a twin-engine private Learjet-60 (reg. N999LJ), operated by Inter Travel And Services, with six passengers onboard, according to Lynne Douglas, public information officer for the Columbia Metro Airport. While taking off, the plane, which never left the ground, overran the runway, struck an antenna array and several lights, and began sending up sparks. It skidded off the end of the runway, through a perimeter fence separating the airfield from a nearby roadway, and then crossed the roadway, coming to a stop on an embankment. The plane caught fire on impact. Douglas said two passengers — who were later confirmed to be AM and Barker — escaped the aircraft while it was on the ground, while the other two passengers and two crew members died in the crash. An eye witness said, that he saw a fireball crossing the road near the airport and then realized it was a plane. He saw jet fuel shoot out across the roadway and then saw two men, who were both on fire, patting each other down to extinguish the flames. |

UN helicopter crashes in Darfur killing four crew members 29.09.2008 - A Mi-8 helicopter contracted to carry food aid for the UN African Union mission in Darfur crashed near Kalma Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp shortly after its takeoff from Nyala. It was owned by a Sudanese airliner Supreme Food Co, a catering company that supplies rations to the UN mission and hired by UNAMID. The helicopter had just left the airport in Nyala, the regional capital, when it crashed in a field of watermelon and sorghum. All four people on board, including the three Russian crew members, were killed. The fourth person was identified as a Sudanese member of the crew. Two of the crew members died at the scene while two other died of their wounds at the hospital later. A witness, who lives in the nearby Kalma Camp for displaced people, said he saw the helicopter explode in midair. “There was a big noise,” he said through a translator. “After the sound, the helicopter divided into two. It was completely covered in fire in the sky, and then it crashed into the ground.” He did not hear gunshots before the helicopter crashed. UN police officers, who arrived first on the scene, claimed that they heard gunshots after the crash. The rebels deny to shot at the helicopter. The UN peacekeeping mission in Darfur is still investigating the cause of the crash and investigators did not know whether the helicopter had been shot down. |
