The C-130 Hercules transport plane (A-1310), operated by the Indonesian Air Force's 32 Squadron, was destroyed when it crashed shortly after takeoff from Medan- Soewondo Air Force Base. The aircraft took off at 11:48 hrs local time from runway 23 at Soewondo Air Force Base. Shortly after takeoff the crew radioed that they were returning to base. About two minutes later the aircraft impacted buildings and crashed. A fire erupted.

An Air Force spokesman reported that the nr.4 engine had failed on takeoff. A woman who witnessed the crash said she noticed that at least two of the C-130’s four propellers were not turning when the aircraft smashed into a gated compound of shops with living spaces above them. The witness said that in the seconds before the crash she saw thick smoke coming from one of the plane’s wings. Maj. Gen. Fuad Basya, the chief spokesman for the Indonesian military, said the doomed aircraft was purchased in 1964 from the United States. He denied that it was overloaded.

All 122 people on the plane (12 crew-members and 110 passengers) and at least 21 people on the ground were killed. At least 3 residents were injured.
