Plane crash kills 3 families with
young children on way to vacation

22.03.2009//20:30 GMT
USA/Montana/Butte

Three families with young children were heading to a ski vacation together when their plane  crashed into a cemetery in Montana. The
Pilatus PC-12 (N128CM), manufactured in 2001 and registered to Eagle Cap Leasing Inc. in Enterprise, Ore., performed a flight from Oroville, CA (KOVE) to Bozeman, MT (KBZN), but crashed into a cemetary after attempting a diversion to Butte, MT (KBTM). Butte is approximately 85 miles West-Northwest of Bozeman.
Witnesses, including Harley Howard, described the plane flying low and suddenly diving.
"All of a sudden, the airplane tail lifted up and as it lifted, it spun around and was at a 90 degree angle to the ground, and the top of the airplane was facing us and just looked like someone took a hold of the plane and it just drove into the ground," he said. "There was a ball of fire when it crashed."
Federal investigators said that with no flight data recorder or cockpit voice recorder on the plane and no survivors, an investigation into what caused the crash could last months.
Investigators are looking into whether the single-engine plane was overloaded, what role
weather may have played in the accident and what made the pilot decide to divert to Butte. Experts urged reporters not to "jump to conclusions" about the crash. Several factors will be looked at during the investigation, including maintenance records, pilot's records, weights of passengers and where they were sitting.
Early speculation focused on the fact that there were 14 people aboard the 11-seat aircraft, but young children often travel on the laps of adult passengers.
Investigators said
seven adults and seven children were on board, and all died in the crash Sunday.
Authorities have not publicly identified the victims. But colleagues and loved ones have named all 14:
Amy Jacobson of St. Helena, Calif., and Vanessa Pullen of Lodi, Calif. Jacobson's husband, Erin, and their children Taylor, 4; Ava, 3; Jude, 2, also died in the crash as did Pullen's husband, Michael, and their children Sydney, 9, and Christopher, 7; Brent, of Durham, Calif., was killed in the crash along with his wife, Kristen and their children, Heyley, 5 and Caleb, 4. The pilot of a single-engine Pilatus PC-12, Buddy Summerfield, that crashed in a Butte cemetery Sunday was a former Air Force pilot who had also logged 8,500 hours of civilian flight time.

Robert Decker,
Canadian helicopter crashes
in Atlantic with 18 aboard

12.03.2009//12:25 GMT
Canada/NL/St. John's

The helicopter "The Jeanne d'Arc Breeze" carrying 18 people on its way Thursday to an offshore oil platform ditched in the Atlantic Ocean off Newfoundland. Two people have been spotted in the water, as well as a life-raft, but there's no sign of the helicopter. Winds are fairly strong in the area with six- to nine-foot waves,  said Jeri Grychowski of the Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax. At about 9:18 a.m. NT, or 7:48 a.m. ET, its crew issued a mayday and an alert about technical problems, saying there was a main gearbox oil-pressure problem and requesting clearance to return to St. John's. 37 minutes later it crashed in the Atlantic Ocean.
The
S-92 Sikorsky helicopter (C-GZCH), operated by Cougar Helicopters of St. John's, went down 55 miles southeast of the provincial capital of St. John's. Police were blocking the road to the Cougar office.
The first call for help was placed to air traffic control in Gander.
A Hercules aircraft and four Cormorant rescue helicopters are on their way to the site, and a coast guard ship and a supply ship are about an hour away.
One man,
Robert Decker, was recovered alive from the area where the Sikorsky S92 chopper, the flight known as Cougar 911, crashed.
Searchers also brought back the body of
one woman killed in the crash to St. John's; 16 of those on board are still missing.
The emergency room at a St. John's hospital was being cleared in preparation for the possibility of "critically ill or hypothermic people."
The aircraft was equipped with survival suits that would enable passengers to survive for 24 hours in icy waters. All passengers and crew must wear a survivor suit before they board a helicopter.
However, rescuers have so far been unable to pick up signals from locator beacons attached to each suit.
Hibernia is located about 200 miles east of St John's, Newfoundland. The oil field is owned jointly by ExxonMobil Canada, Chevron Canada Resources, Petro-Canada, Canada Hibernia Holding Corporation, Murphy Oil and StatoilHydro Canada Ltd.

Cargo plane crashes in Uganda,
11 killed

Uganda/Entebbe/Lake Victoria

An Aerolift Ilyushin
IL-76 chartered by Dynacorp on behalf of the African Mission to Somalia (AMISOM), registration S9-SAB performing a charter freight flight from Entebbe (Uganda) to Mogadishu (Somalia) with 7 passengers and 4 crew on board, crashed into Lake Victoria about 9km from the airport near Bugunga Island shortly after takeoff from Entebbe at 05:14 local (02:14 GMT) and sank. It was carrying tents and water purification equipment for the African Union Mission in Somalia when the accident happened. The dead on board included a Burundian army general (Brig.-Gen. Salum Ndikumana)and two senior colleagues (Col. Emmanuel Nayubu and Capt. Dr Pamphile Nkurunziza), four Russian crewmembers (flight captain Vicktor Kovalyov, flight captain Alex Vouchenko, flight engineer Korol Eugueny, and navigator Zavoloka Vladmir), a South African, an Indian and two Ugandans, a corporal and an airport loadmaster. One of the Ugandans aboard the plane is Alex Kilembe.
The aircraft plunged into the water at a place referred to as
Magombe, loosely translated as graveyard, owing to the disasters that have occurred there in the past. Several boats have reportedly capsized in the area and 4 fishermen were injured. Two of the hit fishermen, Mr Fred Batte and Mr Karim Mubajje, were later used as guides by the rescue team.
Eyewitnesses reported, that 2 of the 4 engines of the aircraft flamed out during the initial climb.
