An Airbus A320 (D-AIPX) operated by Germanwings was destroyed in an accident in a mountainous area in southern France. All 144 passengers and 6 crew members were killed.
Flight 4U9525 departed Barcelona, Spain at 10:00 hours local time (09:00 UTC) on a regular passenger service to D
usseldorf, Germany. The flight reached its cruising altitude of FL380 at 10:27 hours. The last radio contact with the flight was at 10:30 h. The airplane began losing altitude. The aircraft impacted a very steep, rugged mountainside in the French Alps at an altitude of about 1500 m (4920 feet).
Based on cockpit audio recordings from the first black box, recovered hours after the March 24 crash, prosecutors believe 27-year-old German co-pilot Andreas Lubitz locked the captain out of the cockpit and veered the plane into a descent. The pilot in the cockpit used the automatic pilot to put the airplane on a descent towards an altitude of 100 feet, the BEA said in a statement. "Then several times the pilot modified the automatic pilot settings to increase the speed of the airplane as it descended."

Investigators have not found any writings or conversations where Lubitz shared his motives or confessed to any plans. However, medical records reveal that Lubitz was suicidal at one time and underwent psychotherapy. This was before he ever got his pilot's license. Co-pilot Lubitz had 630 hours of flight experience and had started working in 2013. German prosecutors said that Lubitz had made Internet searches on ways to commit suicide in the days ahead of the crash as well as searches about cockpit doors and safety precautions.

Germanwings is a lower-cost unit of Lufthansa, Germany's biggest airline. It has been operating since 2002. It serves mainly European destinations.
