24.07.2014/ 01:55 UTC

A McDonnell Douglas MD-83 passenger plane (EC-LTV), operating on a flight for Air Algerie and leased from Spanish airline Swiftair for the Summer season, crashed at 01:55 UTC in the area of Gossi, Mali. All 116 occupants died in the accident. Flight AH5017 departed Ouagadougou Airport (OUA), Mali at 01:05 UTC. It was expected to arrive at Algiers, Algeria at 05:10 UTC. Last contact was at 01:48 UTC. The crew had requested a route change to avoid a storm. The black box flight recorder, which was usable, showed there was a sudden loss of air speed before the plane banked sharply to the left then plummeted towards the ground amid stormy weather conditions. It took only around a second for the plane to fall from its last recorded altitude of around 500 metres, or 1,600 feet, to the ground of the Malian desert.
